Pop Warner “Little Scholars”
Dear Parents and Guardians:
Pop Warner is the only national youth athletic program in America that requires its athletes to prove average or higher grades before participation. Accordingly, the Pacifica Tigersharks & Pop Warner recognize and reward scholastic achievement. Children who participate in Pop Warner football or cheer are also participating in a Scholastic Program. The Peninsula Pop Warner Organization started its Scholar-Athlete program in 1981. The intent and focus was to reinforce to its participants, that academic achievement and sports go hand in hand.
As part of the league sign up process, your child is required to submit the report card(s) that cover all terms within the school’s prior academic year-as of 8/1/2008.
The grades from the last grading period are used to determine a child’s academic status. Grades from the entire school year are used to determine eligibility in the Academic All American Program.
The Pacifica Tigersharks Football and Cheer Organization is relentless in its emphasis of the importance of academic achievement. In addition to national recognition, the Pacifica Tigersharks have taken scholastic recognition a step further. The Tigersharks Board of Directors also recognizes and awards our very own Top Scholars from each team and division. The board feels that this program reinforces the need for its participants to remain in school and continue to work hard to achieve academic excellence.
An excerpt from the league description of the program is as follows:
1. Eligibility Program:
A player/cheerleader must have a grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher to participate in Pop Warner. To meet this requirement we require a report card that displays the student’s final quarter grades. Every report card is reviewed to verify that the eligibility requirement is met. If a player or cheerleader has a GPA that is lower than 2.0 or a report card is unavailable, they can only participate with approval from an Administrator at their school, and either parent. In these cases, a Pop Warner Alternative Scholastic Eligibility Form can be accepted in lieu of a report card. A student will then be required to obtain periodic progress reports as required by National Pop Warner rules.
2. Recognition Program:
Every year parents and players are asked to complete a Pop Warner All American Form. This form requests information about a student’s extracurricular activities and awards. The form and the full year report card are then scored. The report card is 85% of the total score. The All American Form is 15%. The scholastic form is graded in three areas: Honors, Extra-Curricular Activities/Community Involvement and Community Activities. Based on these final scores scholastic teams are put together, Scholastic First Team (highest scoring), Second Team, and Third Team.
All players and cheerleaders on a scholastic team receive an award and are invited to attend a Regional awards ceremony in January or February honoring the students’ scholastic achievement. In addition, the top scores for the players/cheerleaders are sent to National Pop Warner where they have a chance to win a National Scholastic Award. Players/Cheerleaders who have won multiple National Awards, and who are in the 8th grade or above, have a chance to win Scholarships.
